FASHION REBELLION
SCHOOLS SEWING PROGRAMME
Supporting D&T and sustainability in schools
The Programme is currently running or has recently trialled in the following schools: Princess Frederica primary school, Barlby primary school, Gladstone park primary school, King Alfreds lower school, Fulham preparatory school, Knatchbull boys grammer school & in St Josephs RC primary school & St Marys primary school Willesden (trialled).
“Using the programme means that children progress at their own speed & to their own ability so they can enjoy the learning process. They love their eco-makes & the technical drills help them to understand how to use the machines confidently so there are far fewer issues & the session is fun & stress-free.”

Amanda Riley has taught over 3000 sewing workshops for 8-16 yearolds since 2009. During lockdown she created an online schools programme so that machine sewing could be taught to much larger groups of beginners because “It’s like trying to teach 8+ beginners on 8+ pianos all at once, almost impossible without the support of child-friendly video tutorials.”
The intention is to provide thought-through, achievable upcycled projects to help children learn life skills, improve dexterity, co-ordination, focus & concentration, boost self-esteem and to teach & encourage the reuse of unwanted or damaged textiles.
Children learn how to sew with confidence, learn multiple techniques and take home several items every term.
Its for anyone aged 8+ years.
It can be used in both Primary and Secondary education.
All you need to run it is good wi-fi coverage, headphones and tablets.
We will help you set up, train a group leader & provide free Janome sewing machines for your first term.

How it works
*Beginners love the short instructional videos because they don’t feel any pressure to keep up so learning is fun.
*It’s super easy to follow, repeating anything they don’t understand
as often as needed.
* Fewer mistakes are made because learning is in bite-size chunks with repetition & reminders of key aspects.
*Each 3-8 minute video adds a new strand of knowledge
or puts into practice newly learned techniques.
*The programme can help to extend attention spans to benefit those who struggle to stay focused in class.
*The programme can be run during school hours, after school, lunchtimes or whenever required.
*Students work through zones to create their eco-makes while learning
life-skills via upcycling to empower & encourage more sustainable choices.
*It’s an inexpensive & easy way to support teachers while helping to
reduce global textile pollution.
*It brings happiness & boosts self-esteem & dexterity.
“The Fashion Rebellion eco-sewing programme has been a huge success at our school. It is very popular with the parents and the children & each term it’s over-subscribed. The children absolutely love it & are very proud of their creations. I would definitely recommend it to others. I am happy to speak to anyone who is interested in running it.”
